A Brief History

  • In 1909, Buffalo National Park in Alberta was established with a herd of 300 plains bison.
  • By 1916, the park housed over 2,000 bison, leading to overpopulation.
  • Many were moved to Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta, which was established in 1922.
  • Today, approximately 400,000 bison live in North America, with only 20,000 considered wild.
