Join me for a (now indoor) picnic in Malhamdale!
Date: Sunday 14th September 2025
Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Rookery Meeting Room, YHA Malham, BD23 4DB
Come and join me for a relaxed afternoon picnic in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to celebrate the geocaching community! I was granted this community celebration event and could think of no better place to celebrate.
Whether you're a seasoned cacher or brand new to the game, this is a great opportunity to catch up with friends, meet new players, swap stories and trackables, and enjoy the stunning surroundings of Malham.
🧺 What to Expect
This is a casual, bring-your-own-picnic event. We'll be gathering in the Rookery meeting room at the Youth Hostel Association in Malham, a picturesque village surrounded by limestone scenery and rolling hills. Please bring your own snacks, drinks, picnic blanket and, in case of inclement weather, jackets! There’ll be plenty of time to chat. I've set the event time later in the day in case you'd like to explore the area before the event.
There will be a logbook to sign and a box for trackables. Feel free to bring any TBs or geocoins you'd like to swap or discover.
No need to stay for the full two hours—drop by whenever suits you. Everyone is welcome, and I'd love to see new faces as well as familiar ones. If you have any questions, feel free to message me in advance.
🚍 Transport
Public Transport
Malham is accessible by bus from Skipton via the North Yorkshire DalesBus service. From further afield you can take a train to Skipton and transfer onto the bus from there. Please check current timetables closer to the date at www.dalesbus.org. The bus stop is at the national park centre.
Parking
Parking is available at the Malham National Park Centre (BD23 4DA), which is where the event is being held. On busy days the local farmers also open up the surrounding fields to cars, so paid parking should not be an issue. Charges apply for all options. There is only very limited roadside parking in the village, so please park considerately. If you'd like to arrange a car share, mention this in your log or reach out to other attendees.
🥾 Explore the Area
Malham is a gateway to some of the most scenic walks in the Dales.
- Janet’s Foss - A small, picturesque waterfall with a plunge pool, once used as a sheep dip. Now a popular wild swimming spot, especially refreshing on warm summer evenings.
- Gordale Scar - A dramatic gorge with a powerful waterfall, carved by glacial activity. Adventurous visitors sometimes climb the falls in dry weather; the shaded gorge offers a cool escape on hot days.
- Malham Cove - A towering limestone cliff with a vast pavement at the top, shaped by glaciers and rain over millennia. Once a mighty waterfall, water now flows underground and resurfaces at the base.
All three can be accessed via the Malham Landscape Trail, a moderate 7.2 km (4.5 mile) circular route with around 150 metres of ascent that begins and ends in Malham village. The terrain includes well-maintained paths, rocky sections, and gentle climbs, making it suitable for most walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. Along the way, you'll encounter some of the Yorkshire Dales’ most iconic scenery, including waterfalls, dramatic limestone cliffs, and peaceful woodland. But of course, you don’t need to complete the walk to attend the event!
Looking forward to picnicking with you in this beautiful part of the world!
