Geocache Description:

This 2 hour long Community Celebration Event celebrates three things.

  1. the 25th Anniversary of Geocaching, by getting geocachers together to swap tales and Trackables;
  2. the Letterbox Hybrid geocache type, with a unique Letterboxing stamp;
  3. the Moths of South Wales, with a chance to see a range of brightly coloured species caught at Old Lands.

You don't need to stay for the whole Event!

Geocaching began in May 2000, when Dave Ulmer left a container near Beavercreek, Oregon and posted its coordinates (N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800) on the internet. Since then, over 3.3 Million geocaches have been hidden around the world. The hobby has given a huge number of people a lot of enjoyment over the last 25 years, so there is much to celebrate about it.

Letterboxing started on Dartmoor in 1854, when a guide from Chagford named James Perrott left a box in a cairn at Cranmere Pool for walkers to leave messages in. Letterboxing continues on Dartmoor, with offshoots elsewhere including on Lundy Island, where my family first encountered the idea of searching for hidden boxes. My first geocache Hide was a Letterbox Hybrid: Graffiti Tree GC914ER. The Graffiti Tree doubled as one of 10 private Letterboxes that we maintained for our holiday guests, and it is the only one we have retained since we stopped having guests to stay here.

Moth recording began in the Victorian era, and I have been documenting the moths here since 1994. Moths are hugely varied in colour, size and shape, and this Event is a chance to see some of them.

The Event will take place on tables adjacent to the Old Lands carpark (a few metres from the Posted Coordinates). It will run from 16:00-18:00 and people are welcome to come for as long or short a time as they want.

  • SamBryo will show people moths at 16:30 (but this time will keep moths cool until the end of the Event so later attendees will be able to see them too);
  • a 'Local Letterbox' quiz will include a TB prize;
  • the first clue for the private Old Lands Ultimate Spy trail (with a unique Letterbox stamp) will be available at the Posted Coordinates, so attendees will be able to walk this cipher-based trail around the Dingestow Court garden;
  • TB discovering and swapping will take place at the tables;
  • local apple juice will be provided.

We have parking for about 15 cars, so please log a Will Attend so we can work out whether we need to arrange overflow parking.
