Geocache Description:

Kayaking is one of my favourite activities and the paddle to historic Bar Island is one of my favourite destinations. Grab your water craft and join me in celebrating 10 years of geocaching.

I will be launching from Deerubbun Reserve boat ramp at 6:45am if you would like to join me for the paddle. Otherwise feel free to make your own way to Bar Island and I look forward to seeing you there.

Bar Isand is a small bushland covered island located off Fishermans Point on the Hawkesbury River approximately 10km to the west of the township of Brooklyn.

For thousands of years the island was home to the local Aboriginal communities. In the 19th century it became the site of a church, school and cemetery. With the arrival of the railway the focus of settlement shifted from Bar Island to Brooklyn. The school closed, the church fell into ruins and the cemetery was neglected.

Enjoy the native flora and fauna, making sure to keep an eye out for the threatened glossy black cockatoo and whistling kites.

Getting to the island

Bar Island is approximately 7km from Deerubbun Reserve boat ramp. The trip is around 1-2 hours each way via kayak, depending on your fitness and ability.

There are hire options at Brooklyn, but be aware that there are often restrictions on where you can take a hire craft, so please check to ensure Bar Island is permitted as a destination.

Don't forget to check out the HMAS Parramatta shipwreck which is nearby.
