REFER TO THE MAP IN THE LINK BELOW FOR PLANNED ROAD CLOSURES
A few begin as early as 5:00pm (marked in red), with more at 6:30pm (marked in yellow).
The map indicates which parking areas are reserved for parade participants and staging, but it doesn't list all the public parking that's available. In addition to the parking marked with a blue P on the map, there are lots at the Shoppes, across the street to the northeast at Gateway Village, across the street to the west at Payne Ranch Centre, and directly across the street to the north in the small strip mall.
The Boat Parade will begin at 7:00 pm starting from City Center Drive and Shoppes Drive (marked with a star). Boats will travel south down City Center Drive, south on Peyton Drive, then turn around at Eucalyptus Drive before heading back north on Peyton Drive.
During the parade, announcers will be located along the route and will share information about parade entries. Spectator viewing will be allowed on City Center Drive, Shoppes Drive, and Peyton Drive. To view a map of the parade route, visit www.chinohills.org/BoatParade.
Another event update:
The event still starts at 5:15 but it looks like I'll be 15-20 minutes late because of an unexpected work commitment.
However, my muggle hubbie, Dan, will be there on time with the event log and refreshments, so please feel free to arrive on time as well so that you can snag some parking - the area is likely to be busy because of the parade later that evening.
There are small tables just outside the Barnes & Noble - the plan is to meet there and pull a few of them together. There are also a few larger tables about 30 feet west of there, so if there's one available the group may shift over but should still be within easy eyesight.
If you're staying for the parade, you might want to bring a camp chair, and if you do, you can use it for our gathering as well, as I don't think there are a lot of chairs in general.
Event update:
It turns out that this geocaching event is the same night and location as the Chino Hills Boat Parade.
For anyone who’s not familiar with Chino Hills, it’s totally land-locked – not a river or lake in sight. So a boat parade – how?
Thirty-three years ago, three drinking buddies decided to make fun of the city’s incorporation by holding a parade of decorated boats, pulled through the neighborhood streets on trailers. It started with just one boat blaring Chipmunks music and grew to several boats after neighbors joined in. Santa Claus wore a cotton ball beard, tossed out candy canes, and drank peppermint schnapps from a flask.
Nowadays the parade is hosted by the city of Chino Hills in partnership with the Kiwanis Club. It typically includes more than 65 boats, plus marching bands, vintage cars, equestrian units, Scout troops, and more. It's a unique holiday treat. Who needs water?
Come early to the event to get parking, and stay for the parade at 7pm. More information about the parade route and parking options can be found here.
