Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is the largest of the three islands southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The island is about 12 kilometers wide and about 20 kilometers long and has an area of over 200 square kilometers. Due to its unique landscapes, beaches, hills and caves, it is one of the leading tourist destinations in Bali. Along with Kelingking Beach, Banah Cliff Point, Diamond Beach or Goa Giri Putri Cave, for example, Broken Beach is a place of geotourism attraction as it offers unique geological processes.

Broken Beach
The entrance fee (2024) for Broken Beach is IDR 25,000 per person (~USD 1.60). This fee helps with the site’s maintenance and preservation. Additionally there is a parking fee of about IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000 (~ USD 0.30 to USD 0.65).
This geological site is located near Sakti Village. It is in a karst landscape in the form of dolines or sihkholes. Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolomite. At Broken Beach the landscape is formed from dissolving activity in limestone, which is influenced by wave erosion activity.
Geology:
Geological here at broken beach you can see a karstification process. Two mechanisms are the basis of karstification: The flow of water into the carbonate rock and the dissolution of carbonates by acidic water. Fractures in rocks control the formation of dolines at broken beaches; that can be seen from traces of dissolutionin rocks and fracture structures here around the Broken Beach.
Geomorphology:
Geomorphology is generally divided into endogenous and exogenous processes. Tectonic forces from the Earth's interior are referred to as endogenous processes. They usually have a height-building effect, i.e. increasing relief, and are responsible for the height differences in the earth's crust; for example: epirogenesis, the continental drift, earthquakes and magmatic phenomena.
Exogenous processes are largely controlled by climatic conditions and take place on the earth's surface. They create the detailed forms of the relief, whose wide spectrum of individual forms is determined by the different rocks. Exogenous processes usually have a height-lowering, eroding and relief-reducing effect. At this site, exogenous limestone dissolution processes can be observed in a karst landscape with geological phenomena in the form of sinkholes or dolines.
Limestone:
The Limestone found at the location is clastic limestone; namely calcarenite-calsirudite. Over long periods of time, the loose skeletal sediments are converted into bioclastic limestone by the addition of a chemically precipitated carbonate cement between the fragments of coral an pelecypods. The geological origin lies in Miocene, which began about 23.03 million years ago and ended about 5.333 million years ago. The limestone washed out from the rock is deposited at the bottom of the cauldron and influences the turquoise color of the sea at Broken Beach.
The mystic story about Broken Beach:
Once upon a time there was a cow walking on a meadow by itself. It ate the grass on that meadow just like a normal cow. But there was one thing missing: the owner. The cow just stood by itself. Some minutes later, a bunch of farmers coming back from their fields walked through that grassland and saw the cow. Because they thought there was no one who owned the cow, they took it back to the village to slaughter the cow and cook it. Along with the completion of that “Meal time”, the sun set and the night came in. All of the villagers, including the farmers, were so happy because the meat tasted so good. But after the meal an ugly oldman with his dirty clothes came and asked them about his lost cow. “Did you see my cow around here? I’ve looked for it for a couple hours, but I can’t find it.” said the oldman to the group of people whose stomach looked so full.
Unfortunatelly, no one confessed that they had slaughtered and cooked it. To find the truth, the old man made a contest. He took out a stick from his robe and plug it into the ground. After doing that, he said, “If you told me the truth, then you will definitely be able to pull the stick out of the ground. If there’s no one who can do, I will consider all of you as liars.”
After saying that, one by one tried to pull the stick out but until the last turn, there was no one could pull the stick out. Seeing no one could finish the test, the oldman became angry and felt cheated. “You’ve played with me and tricked me. As a punishment, I will curse you.” said the oldman.
Afterwards, the oldman pulled the stick out and from the hole caused by the stick, the water came out swiftly followed by an earthquake. The villagers who saw it ran to save their necks. But before it happened, the land where they stood collapsed and caused a giant hole in Pasih Uug. There was no one alive except the villagers who didn’t eat the meat and lived pretty far from that cursed village. But where the hell was the old man? He was mysteriously gone. Since then, the place was called Broken Beach.
