Geocache Description:

The Broad Bay area was known to the local Māori as Whaka Oho Rahi (meaning 'large resource' - so a place where food was gathered)
The first European resident here was John Styles who took up land here in 1854 and the village that grew here was a farming service settlement. During the 1870's William Larnach used the the Bay to land building materials to construct Larnach Castle. The materials were transported up the hill on the Camp Road bridle track.
