Geocache Description:

Zápisy bez fotografie a zaslaných odpovědí budou smazány.

Svatý kopeček

Svatý kopeček, původně Tanz Berg neboli Tančící hora, spolu s ikonickou zvonicí a kaplí sv.

Výsledkem těžby postupně zmizela i velká část Turoldu.

Geologie

Svatý kopeček vystupuje výrazně nad okolní krajinu a svými strmými svahy ji převyšuje o 140 metrů.

Ty v sobě kombinují působení sesuvu půdy a mořských vodních proudů. Turbiditní proud typicky vzniká v důsledku sesuvu nebo zemětřesení. Spouštěčem je tedy gravitace. Uvolněné částice hornin v měllkých vodách se valí do hlubin oceánu a vzniklý mořský proud s sebou postupně odnáší další nesoudržné části mořského dna, nad kterým proudí. Turbiditní proudy mají ohromnou sílu a mohou dosahovat vysokých rychlostí. Tím pádem mají potenciál erodovat mořský svah a nabalovat nesoudržné sedimenty ze stále hlubších vod. Odnesené horniny pak končí na hlubokém mořském dně, kde proud postupně ztratí svoji energii a zanikne.

Dnešní vzhled Svatého kopečku má nasvědomí vápenec. Méně odolné usazené horniny byly totiž působením eroze postupně odnášeny z povrchu hřbetu kopce a nakonec tu zbyly pouze vypreparované do krajiny čnící tvrdé vápencové skály neboli bradlo.

  ENGLISH VERSION (google translate)

I recommend parking at the indicated coordinates and start climbing from there. It is the shortest way. Of course, it is possible to start from the second tent directly in Mikulov and walk the Way of the Cross, visit the chapel, walk over the top of the hill to the viewpoint and from there go down to the parking lot. Be careful when it's wet, it slides all over the hill, including the way of the cross!

Send me the answers to the following questions:

Stage 1 or 2: You are standing at the parking lot (binoculars might be handy here) or one floor below the viewpoint with the railing (stage2 is much closer)

1. Look at the exposed quarry wall with the railing above and describe what you see. What is this arrangement of rocks called? Indicate the predominant orientation direction of the rocks. What rocks most likely make up each color?

2. Explain in your own words how the given arrangement of rocks was created (what event caused it) and think about whether such an event, causing the rock arrangement, can still happen today.

Stage 3. You are standing at the top of the hill at the railing

3. Identify the rock you are standing on and describe in your own words how the rock was formed and how old it is (in millions of years)

4. Take a photo of you or an object with your nickname at the railing with a flooded quarry in the background.

I am looking forward to your photos from the place. Logs missing a photo or answers will be deleted.

Holy hill

Holy hill, originally Tanz Berg or Dancing Mountain, together with the iconic bell tower and chapel of St. Šebestiána on top is an unmissable landmark rising above the village of Mikulov to a height of 363 meters above sea level. The most impressive is probably the view from the town hall tower or Kozího hradek, from where the white rocks on the slopes and the polished white steps of the Way of the Cross stand out. Be careful, it's slippery here even when it's dry!

A limestone quarry was opened in the northeastern part of the hill in 1816. Back then, the stone was mined by hand and on a small scale. However, in the second half of the nineteenth century, Mikulov was connected to the railway and the mining of limestone multiplied. Janičův vrch, which was originally over 300 meters high, has completely disappeared from the surface of the earth, similar to Holy Hill. Today, its remains are a public swimming pool to the northeast across the road. As a result of mining, a large part of Turold gradually disappeared. Public protests in the second half of the twentieth century saved St. Kopeček from a similar fate. Otherwise, he would have been hauled up to the summit chapel. After mining ended, some parts of the hill were artificially reforested.

The Holy Hill can be accessed from several directions along marked hiking trails. The Mikulov development is closely adjacent to it from the western side. The southern, eastern and part of the northern slopes are planted with ubiquitous vineyards. The northeastern side with the remains of the quarry is a silent witness to the former stone mining.

Geology

The Holy Hill rises significantly above the surrounding landscape and, with its steep slopes, exceeding it by 140 meters. It is part of the Bohemian Massif, which is one of the two basic geological units in Czech Republic territory. The other one is the Western Carpathians.

The hill has the shape of an oval ridge that runs from southwest to northeast. From a geological point of view, it is a tectonic bar formed by Jurassic limestones. Bar was created as a result of the movement of the earth's plates in the Mesozoic, in the Jurassic period, i.e. approximately 200 million to 145 million years ago. In addition to limestone, there were also less resistant sedimentary rocks. They were significantly younger (from the Neogene period 3 - 23 million years) and had a flysch character.

Flysch is a powerful belt of sediments of marine origin made up of layers of different rocks that alternate with each other many times. Most often, these are limestones, clays and sandstones, which form uniform multi-colored bands of different widths and can thus create an interesting mosaic. They can be run in different directions, vertically or horizontally, at different angles, they can wave or break, depending on the geological history of the place.

How does this special arrangement of so many different layers come about? They are caused by turbidity currents.  They combine the effects of landslides and sea currents. A turbidity current is typically created as a result of a landslide or earthquake. So the trigger is gravity. Loose rock particles in shallow waters roll into the depths of the ocean, and the resulting sea current gradually carries with it other non-cohesive parts of the sea floor over which it flows. Turbidity currents have tremendous power and can reach high speeds. Thus, they have the potential to erode the sea slope and pack incohesive sediments from ever deeper waters. The carried rocks then end up on the deep seabed, where the current gradually loses its energy and disappears.

Today's appearance of the Holy Hill is caused by limestone. The less resistant sedimentary rocks were gradually carried away from the surface of the hill's ridge by the action of erosion, and in the end, only hard limestone rocks, or scarp, were left that were dissected into the landscape. The ubiquitous landscape-forming limestone is usually a white or gray rock. It consists of carbonates, especially calcite or calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Limestone was formed by the accumulation of shells and shells of animals on the bottom of the sea in ancient times.

On the solid surface of the hill (limestone bar) there were drifts of loess, which, together with clay sediments and fragments of limestone, created ideal conditions for rare plant species. Not only from a geological point of view, but also from a botanical point of view, Svatý kopeček is an important location. Due to the abundance of protected and rare species of plants and animals, its territory was declared a nature reserve in 1946.
