Garland’s library system was created from a tragic disaster and transformed into the four wonderful libraries we have today. It all began on May 9, 1927, when a tornado ripped through Garland and claimed fourteen lives. S. E. Nicholson, a former mayor, and his mother were among those killed. Nicholson’s brother, Walter R. Nicholson, decided to establish a library to honor the memory of his mother and brother. In 1933, he purchased the Citizens National Bank building located on the east side of the Downtown Square and gave it to the city. The building and library was dedicated on November 24, 1933, with around 750 people attending the ceremony. A month later, the library opened to the public on December 23, 1933. The library joined the County Library program in March 1947. The City took on partial responsibility of the library in 1956, with the library designated and budgeted as a city department.

In 1961, the County was no longer able to continue the County Library program and the City of Garland assumed total operation of the library. Because of Garland’s population boom, a new location was needed for the library and in October 1970, the Nicholson Memorial Library moved into a new building at Austin and Sixth Street. As the library system began to expand to other branches in Garland, the library at Austin and Sixth Street became known as the Central Library.
