Welcome back! It’s the return of the Susquehanna River Paddle Cache Series! This series consists of 32 caches hidden along a 7.5 mile stretch of the Susquehanna River between Milford and Portlandville. All caches in the Susquehanna River (SR) series are paddle cache only and should not be attempted from surrounding private lands. You should be able to find, retrieve, sign and replace most of these caches from your vessel unless the river is extremely low.
River Info: This section of the Susquehanna River is wide, slow moving, flat water. Current is almost non-existent and solo paddlers wishing to do an out and back trip should have no problem moving up stream. This section of the Susquehanna is perfect for novice paddlers in kayak, canoe or small john boat. While placing these we moved at a leisurely pace and averaged 3.25 mph. Based on experience with the prior cache series we expect it will take about 5.5 hours to complete the series in its entirety, Milford to Portlandville.
Boat Launches: There are three boat launches that service this section of the river. Waypoints for launch sites have been included in cache listings for cache #1, #2, #22 and #32. The Milford boat launch is furthest north and has room for about 12 cars. Lot launch is on the northeast side under the bridge. This launch has a short steep path from parking to the river. The Susquehanna State Forest launch is in the middle of the series and may best for solo paddlers. The Susquehanna State Forest Launch also serves as a great rest spot. This launch has both a dock and gravel ramp. There is also a porta john there during summer months. The Portlandville Launch is furthest south. This launch has parking for about 10 cars and has a handicap launch making entering and exiting the water very easy. If you haven't experienced one of these launches before you should check it out!
