The “Zhouhou Village” series is to commemorate the vanished Zhouhou Village.
In 1963, Typhoon Gloria caused severe flooding in the Taipei and New Taipei areas. The government consulted American water experts, who suggested widening the Guandu Shizitou Pass. Unexpectedly, this led to seawater backflow, flooding large farmlands in Wugu’s Zhouhou Village, with Sanchong, Luzhou, and Xinzhuang even more severely affected.
In 1980, the government planned to build the Erchong Flood Diversion Canal, requisitioning land in Zhoushiziwei (including parts of Wugu Township’s Zhouhou Village, Zhuhua Village, and Gengliao Village, now known as the Wugu Wetlands) as a flood discharge area. Zhouhou Village was abandoned, and today’s Luzhou Zhongyi Temple was relocated from Zhoushiziwei.
The blasting of the Shizitou Bird Stepping Stone to widen the river mouth caused seawater backflow, turning fertile farmlands into what is now the “Wugu Wetlands.”
Today, after flood control projects, Taipei has successfully achieved typhoon flood drainage functionality and even provides facilities for bike paths and urban parks.
