willkommen im Eisenbahnmuseum Bochum-Dahlhausen. Eisenbahn ist als Transportmittel unverzichtbar für Industrie und Bergbau. Darum spielt sie auch eine entscheidende Rolle in der Entwicklung des Ruhrgebiets. Kein Wunder also, dass hier im Bochumer Süden eines der größten Eisenbahnmuseen Deutschlands jährlich Tausende Besucher*innen empfängt.
Die Anlagen des Museums werden zwischen 1916 und 1918 als Bahnbetriebswerk gebaut. Bis 1925 wartet und repariert das Personal des Betriebswerks die Dampflokomotiven der umliegenden Standorte der Reichsbahn. Danach werden in der Regel 50 Lokomotiven in Dahlhausen stationiert. Die Loks bringen leere Waggons zu den umliegenden Zechen und bringen sie gefüllt mit Kohle zurück. Im Dahlhausener Güterbahnhof werden die Waggons dann zu Güterzügen zusammengestellt und zu ihrem jeweiligen Bestimmungsort geschickt.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wird das Betriebswerk stark beschädigt, aber schnell wieder in Betrieb gesetzt, da man für den Wiederaufbau überall Kohle aus dem Ruhrgebiet braucht. Als aber die letzten Zechen im südlichen Ruhrgebiet während der 1960er Jahre die Förderung einstellen, wird auch die Güterbahn nicht mehr benötigt. Nach rund 50 Jahren Betrieb wird das Betriebswerk 1969 stillgelegt.
Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Eisenbahngeschichte übernimmt das Betriebswerk, versetzt es in den Originalzustand und eröffnet es 1977 als Eisenbahnmuseum. Seit 2011 ist die Stiftung Eisenbahnmuseum Bochum die Eigentümerin.
Das Eisenbahnmuseum präsentiert heute eine vielfältige Sammlung historischer Lokomotiven und Waggons sowie die technischen Anlagen des Bahnbetriebswerks inklusive Lokschuppen, Drehscheibe und Wasserturm. Auf dem Gelände fährt eine historische Feldbahn und auf der Strecke Dahlhausen-Wengern Ost fahren regelmäßig ein Dampfzug und eine dieselgetriebener Schienenbus.
Seit neuestem steht ein Zug im Eisenbahnmuseum, der nicht mehr viel mit den alten Dampfloks zu tun hat. Es handelt sich um einen Prototyp, der bisher dem Hersteller der Beton-Fahrwegträgern gehört. Welcome to the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum. The railway is an indispensable means of transport for industry and mining. That is why it also plays a decisive role in the development of the Ruhr region. Therefor it's no wonder that one of the largest railway museums in Germany welcomes thousands of visitors every year here in the south of Bochum.
The museum's facilities are built between 1916 and 1918 as a railway depot. Until 1925, the staff at the depot maintained and repaired the steam locomotives from the neighbouring Reichsbahn sites. After that, 50 locomotives are usually stationed in Dahlhausen. The locomotives take empty wagons to the neighbouring collieries and bring them back filled with coal. The wagons are then assembled into trains at the Dahlhausen freight station and sent to their respective destinations.
The depot is badly damaged during the Second World War, but quickly put back into operation as coal from the Ruhr area is needed everywhere for reconstruction. However, when the last mines in the southern Ruhr area ceased production in the 1960s, the goods railway was no longer needed. After around 50 years of operation, the depot is shut down in 1969.
The German Society for Railway History takes over the depot, restores it to its original condition and opens it as a railway museum in 1977. The Bochum Railway Museum Foundation has been the owner since 2011.
Today, the railway museum presents a diverse collection of historic locomotives and carriages as well as the technical facilities of the railway depot, including the engine shed, turntable and water tower. A historic light railway runs on the site and a steam train and a diesel-powered rail bus run regularly on the Dahlhausen-Wengern Ost line.
A train has recently arrived at the railway museum that no longer has much to do with the old steam locomotives.
