In merito alle proprietà meccaniche si presenta come un legno semiduro e omogeneo, di notevole durevolezza in sommersione. Per questo motivo, soprattutto in passato, era largamente impiegato come legname da opera per manufatti sommersi. Il legno di ontano è stato, infatti, notoriamente usato nel corso della storia dell'uomo per allestire la palificazione di sostegno delle palafitte o per realizzare manufatti idraulici; è stato inoltre impiegato per costruire le fondazioni delle costruzioni a Venezia.

In terms of mechanical properties, it presents itself as a semi-hard and homogeneous wood, with notable durability when submerged. For this reason, especially in the past, it was widely used as timber for submerged structures. Alder wood has, in fact, been notoriously used throughout human history to set up pilings to support stilts or to create hydraulic products; it was also used to build the foundations of buildings in Venice.
