Geocache Description:

The Tramline, fondly known as The Tramers, holds this geocache which will take you “back on track” if you stumbled “off the beaten track” @ GZAXWQX.

  • The Howth Tram on the Hill of Howth Tramway was a tram which served Howth Head. The tramway replaced a horse bus service in June 1901 and brought customers to railway stations in Sutton and Howth until 31 May 1959. It was run by the Great Northern Railway Ireland (GNR(I)).
  • Route included: Sutton Station, Sutton Cross, Marine Hotel, Saxe Lane(Church Road), Strand Road, Howth Desmesne, St Fintans Cemetery, St Fintans, St Fintans Road, Barren Hill, Red Rock, Somali Village, Ceanchor Road, Bailey Post Office, Convent Gate, Stella Maris, Ravensdale, Tweedys Lane, Hill of Howth, Kitestown Road, Greys Lane, Dungriffin Road, Balkill Road, Island View, Howth Station.
  • Tram No. 9 which was the last tram to run on the line was kept and restored by James Kilroy at Castleruddery in 1979. However, years of wear and tear, neglect and eventually vandalism meant the restoration work was intensive with many elements needing to be reproduced entirely. The restoration took over 14 years and was eventually completed in Howth where No. 9 can still be found today in the National Transport Museum located in the Deerpark estate.
