Visby ruiner/The ruins of Visby
ENGLISH: This is a series of caches that will give you a tour of Visby, focusing on our old church ruins which today is a valued part of the cityscape. The various ruins all have their own stories, and many are currently used as venues for music, theater and school performances.

ENGLISH: S:t Olof's church was once one of Visby's largest and most lavish churches. It was built in the early 1200s, possibly to relieve St. Clemens just above the Botanical Gardens. The church is named after the Norwegian saint King Olaf the Holy, who is considered to have contributed to the Christening of Gotland, explaining why his picture is seen in so many churches on Gotland.
The church was probably the parish church for those who lived around it. Today only parts of the church's west tower remains. After the Middle Ages, the walls of the church was demolished and people could freely use its stones to build other buildings in Visby.

ENGLISH: S:t Clemens church is located just above the Botanical Gardens in Visby. The church is one of the best-researched churches in Visby and its architectural history is fairly well investigated. The church has had several predecessors, the eldest, who was an ordinary rural Romanesque church, was built in the 1100s.
The present church was built in the mid-1200s, and may have been built as a parish church for Danish merchants. The style was influenced by Westphalian churches and this was later to be indicative of many of the churches that were built in the countryside - distinguished by frugal and simple decoration.
Because of the many graves that were found both inside and outside, it is believed that S:t Clemens was one of the most significant parish churches. The oldest gravestones in the church are from the 1100s, and their carvings are Gutnish. On one of the gravestones which is positioned against the wall inside the south entrance the Latin inscription reads: "The Third May Botref left this world for Christ. Whoever you are standing here, pour out your hearts prayers for him." After the Reformation in the 1530s the church was abandoned and then used as stables, outbuildings and quarry.
The legend of the golden goose
A legend of S:t Clemens is that of the golden goose. A shoemaker named Hans Turitz from Salzwedel, Germany overheard a conversation between two gotlandish monks in an inn in Italy some time during the early 1600s. They talked about a treasure that was entombed in S:t Clemens on Gotland. The treasure consisted of a goose with 24 kids, all made of pure gold. He therefore went to Gotland where he found the goose. He became a wealthy man and remained in Visby, where he got married and later on was elected mayor of Visby.
