Cache Across the Avenues, DC Edition: New Jersey Ave. 

 

The CAA (Cache Across the Avenues) DC Edition: This is a series of caches that will take you on a caching tour of all four quadrants of the District of Columbia. One cache will be hidden on each of the 50 State Avenues (actually 48 Avenues + a Street and a Drive). These caches each contain a code word that will lead you to one final cache (to be placed) located in our nation's capitol upon completion of the series. 

 

About this cache: The cache is located on New Jersey Ave. in the neighborhood of Shaw. GZ is a cool spot with Dunbar HS across the way and a beautiful, direct view of the Capitol down New Jersey Ave. Dunbar HS was the first public high school for Black students in the US. The school had a classical academic curriculum, unlike the vocational curriculum of many other DC high schools. The school was under federal control and had high wages and attracted high Dunbar boasts many famous graduates such as Sterling A. Brown and Dr. Charles R. Drew. 


 

Length of Avenue: 2.5 miles

Rank in Size: Tied for 18th  (along with Virginia Ave.)

Quadrants: NW, SE

 

Facts about the Avenue:

  • This avenue developed according to the L'Enfant/Ellicott plans of the city.
  • Along with Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, one of four avenues centered on the U.S. Capitol. 
  • Segmented into two sections: one runs from Florida Avenue in Shaw, Washington, D.C. to Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol. The other runs between Independence Avenue and N Street near the Navy Yard.
  • Most places along New Jersey Ave. offer a view of the US Capitol.
