日本橋は四種類の花崗岩が使用されている石橋です。このEarthCacheでは、花崗岩の特徴と日本国内で石材として産出される花崗岩について学びます。
花崗岩
花崗岩とは、マグマが地下深くでゆっくりと冷えた深成岩のひとつです。黒雲母などのような有色鉱物を1割程度含むものの、主成分が石英と長石であり、全体的に白っぽく見えるのが特徴です。

日本の花崗岩石材
日本には石材として用いられる花崗岩の産地がいくつか存在します。それぞれには、産地にちなんだ銘柄が付けられています。ここでは有名な４つの花崗岩の銘柄を紹介します。
稲田石
茨城県稲田で採れる花崗岩です。長石の割合が高く、白っぽいのが特徴です。
真壁石
茨城県加波山で採れる花崗岩です。近くで採れる稲田石よりも粒が小さいとされています。
北木石
岡山県北木島で採れる花崗岩です。白っぽい石のほかに、赤っぽい石も産出します。
徳山石
山口県黒髪島で採れる花崗岩です。グレーの色合いが特徴で、耐久性に優れています。
日本橋の花崗岩
日本橋には、日本で産出された４種類の花崗岩が使い分けられています。
①舗装とアーチ部分に「稲田石」
②側面部分に「真壁石」
③橋脚・基礎部分に「徳山石」
④高欄部分に「北木石」
が使用されています。

Theme of this EarthCache
Nihonbashi is a stone bridge that uses four types of granite. In this EarthCache, you will learn about the characteristics of granite and the granite produced in Japan that is used as building material.
Granite
Granite is a type of intrusive rock formed from magma that cooled slowly deep underground. While it contains about 10% dark minerals such as biotite, its main components are quartz and feldspar, giving it a generally whitish appearance.

Japanese Granite Stone Materials
In Japan, there are several regions where granite is produced and used as building material. Each has a brand name associated with its place of origin. Here, we introduce four famous brands of granite.
Inada Stone
This granite is quarried in Inada, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is characterized by a high feldspar content, giving it a whitish appearance.
Makabe Stone
This granite is quarried in Mount Kaba, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is said to have finer grains compared to Inada Stone, which is also quarried nearby.
Kitagi Stone
This granite is quarried on Kitagi Island, Okayama Prefecture. In addition to whitish stones, reddish stones are also produced.
Tokuyama Stone
This granite is quarried on Kurokami Island, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its gray color and superior durability.
Granite of Nihonbashi
Nihonbashi uses four types of granite produced in Japan, each utilized in different parts of the bridge.
① "Inada Stone" for paving and arch parts
② "Makabe Stone" for the side sections
③ "Tokuyama Stone" for the bridge piers and foundation
④ "Kitagi Stone" for the railings

Please send your answers to the following questions to the cache owner (atsu_7). You can log without waiting for a response. Photos at the Ground Zero (GZ) are also welcome.
Observe the stones used in the bridge. Many parts of the stones are dirty, and there is also wear on the paved surfaces. Try to find areas with minimal wear or dirt and observe them.
- Compare the granite used in the railing (Kitagi Stone) with the granite used in the paving (Inada Stone). Describe the differences in the characteristics of the rocks that you observed.
- The current Nihonbashi is dirty, but what color do you think stood out when it was first built? Think based on the characteristics of the rocks.
- Why do you think four types of granite were used in Nihonbashi? Share your thoughts.
