大将軍八神社は延暦13年（794年）平安京遷都の際、桓武天皇によって、
大将軍神を奈良春日山麓より平安京大内裏の北西角（陰陽道の天門）の地に勧請し、国家守護、国民の繁栄を祈念したのが始まりです。
大将軍神とは、陰陽道・道教の信仰による方位を司る星神であり、古来、非常に恐れられてきました。
社号は初め、陰陽道のお堂として大将軍堂と称され、応仁の乱の荒廃後に神社として復興。
村の氏神としての信仰も始まり、江戸時代に大将軍神を始め、暦の神八将神とスサノオノ命その御子八神が習合。
又、聖武・桓武両天皇を共にお祀りし、大将軍八神宮と改称。
その後、明治期以降に神仏分離令や廃仏毀釈運動の影響により、現在の信仰形態となりました。
平安朝以来、王城鎮護の神として朝廷や武士の篤い祟敬を受け、その後民間にも拡大。
現在もあらゆる厄災から人々を守護する方除・厄除の神として信仰を受けています。

Daishogun Hachiman Shrine was founded in 794 AD by Emperor Kanmu, who brought the Daishogun deity from the foot of Kasuga Mountain in Nara to pray for national protection and the prosperity of the people. The Daishogun deity, associated with Onmyodo and Taoist beliefs, governs directional star deities and has historically been greatly revered. Initially known as Daishogun Hall as an Onmyodo temple, it was restored as a shrine after the devastation of the Onin War. Local villagers began to worship it as their guardian deity, and during the Edo period, the Daishogun deity was merged with other gods, including the calendar deity Hachishoujin, leading to its renaming as Daishogun Hachiman Shrine. Today, it is still venerated as a god of protection against various calamities.
