Colonel's Wood, or Knockranny Wood, is designated as "Old Woodland" (or ancient woodland) by Coillte, which defines the property as a unique area where old woodland cover has existed since at least the 1830s. There is a lot of ongoing work on the trees and paths in the woods.
Located next to Westport town, with a direct connection to the Greenway, the woods contains 2.4km looped walking trails.
