Ampney Crucis
Situated in the South Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, about 3 miles east of Cirencester, is the lovely village of Ampney Crucis. The village has a beautiful river running through it as well as a nice church, a pub/restaurant, playing fields and many footpaths surrounding it to explore.
Ampney Crucis gets its name from the river (Ampney Brook), a tributary of the Thames, and the church (Church of the Holy Cross). The Old English Amma’s Stream is probably derived from the Latin Amnis – a stream. By 1086 the village was known by its Latin name of Omenie; by 1100 – Amenel; by 1215 – Ameney; and in 1287 Ameney Sancte Crucis. The modern name of Ampney Crucis seems to have been in use since 1535, however, a resident's map of the area from 1632 shows the village as Holiroodeamney.
The Romans were at Ampney Crucis as there is evidence of a settlement greater than 4 hectares in the village. In the 1780’s some workmen who were digging up stone by the side of the London Road discovered an earthenware urn. It contained burnt bones, ashes and some Roman coins of the lower empire. The urn is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

The Village Hall
Ampney Crucis Village Hall can be found on the main road running through the village and has parking facilities and a number of noticeboards at the front of the building.
The Hall was built in 1926 is an ideal venue to hire for meetings, parties, classes and other social activities. Over the years the Management Committee have been striving to keep the Hall in good order for future hirers.
In August 2015, thanks to financial support from The Summerfield Charity Trust, the CDC and village charities the Village Hall installed double glazing throughout and purchased new audio-visual equipment, including an electrically operated screen.
The Hall is regularly used by many organisations including WI, Gardening Club, Rural Cinema, Bridge Club, Toddler Group, Youth Club and Yoga. More details can be found on the village website - https://ampneycrucis.org.uk/
