Brandon Township Public Library - Community Room
Welcome to the Wherigo Workshop!
I have chosen to use my CCE event as an opportunity to host this workshop, aimed at better familiarizing the geocaching community with the Wherigo cache type. I hope you find it beneficial.
So, without further ado:
Summary:
The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate, how to:
- Create a wherigo cartridge,
- Compile it and upload it to wherigo.com website,
- Download it to your phone and play it, using different wherigo players.
There should be enough time to cover all the topics, as the event will run from 10am to 12:30pm. If needed, we can stay until 1:15pm.
Highly recommended to bring your own (as you will be following along the demonstration):
- A laptop computer,
- Internet connection (as the library Internet connection may be not sufficient),
- An extension cord with power strip.
If you prefer, you are more than welcome to bring only paper and a pencil (instead of electronic devices) and follow along this way, no problems here.
The host / the library will provide:
- The room,
- A projector with an HDMI cable and the screen.
- An internet wi-fi connection.
- A water drinking fountain with the capability to fill your water bottle.
Please, log your “Will Attend” to give us an estimate number of attendees, as the room capacity is limited. We have reserved the Community Room with 12 tables, 3 persons per table = 36 persons. There may be more chairs available, but no additional tables.
Preparation for the workshop - to be done ahead of time:
We will be using the program Urwigo to create the cartridge. It is an easy installation available from www.urwigo.cz (The software is from The Czech Republic).
- Use Microsoft Edge. Google Chrome reports issues.
- When on the page, scroll down for English description and link to the English version.
- Click on the link to download .zip file.
- On your laptop, unzip the file and run setup_urwigo.exe. That's it.
If you run into issues, bring your laptop regardless, I will have the install file with me at the workshop.
Or email me directly, I will email the installation file to you.
Agenda:
- Create new cartridge. Add basics - the name, the author, the coordinates of the starting point.
- Create one "pass-thru" zone.
- Create one zone requiring multiple choice answer.
- Create one zone requiring answer, which needs to be typed.
- Add "items" to the "inventory" - the final coordinates, completion code, hint.
- Generate .gwz file of the cartridge and upload it to wherigo.com.
- Add cartridge link to the wherigo cache page.
- Download the cartridge from the cache page and play it on your digital device, using the player of your choice.
- AND - go find the geocache! All workshop participants, should they accept the mission, can claim an FTF!
Looking forward to meeting you all!
Some Q&A:
What exactly IS Wherigo?
Wherigo is a platform that allows you to build location based GPS experiences on your computer and play them in the real world; you actually walk from one location to the next to advance the story.
What is a Wherigo cartridge?
A Wherigo cartridge is a file that contains all the information and media necessary to play a Wherigo experience. We call them cartridges as an homage to the original console-based games.
What is a Wherigo cache?
A Wherigo cache uses the Wherigo cartridge format (i.e. use of zones, characters and/or items) to lead the player to a physical geocache. If a Wherigo cartridge is used as a requirement to find a geocache, it is considered a Wherigo cache regardless of whether it has a puzzle or multi-cache component.
What is the difference between a Wherigo cartridge and a Wherigo cache?
A Wherigo cache includes a physical geocache component and is cross listed on both Wherigo.com and Geocaching.com. A regular Wherigo cartridge contains no physical cache and is only listed on Wherigo.com.
The Wherigo Player
Don't have a wherigo player? All you need to play the cartridge is a smart phone or a wherigo compatible GPSr. The Garmin Colorado and Oregon series up through the 550 are compatible. For the smart phones you can download one of the players here:
For the iPhone - click here for the Wherigo player.
For the Android Smartphone - click here for the WhereYouGo app.
If you have issues with Samsung Galaxy S2x phone, downloading and playing the cartridge, look up GC forum thread here.
Additionally, Geooh GO and GCDroid/WheriDroid Android apps have also integrated wherigo players.
