Kallang River
In the olden days, there were fisherman and traders trading along the Kallang River. Kallang River was also the place, where in the early days the Bugis Traders from Sulawesi (Celebes) unloaded their cargoes of spices, tortoise shells and gold dust from their boats. These sailing boats were a common sight off the sea front even up to the 1960s. (Of course, now its illegal to bring in tortoise shells or other items which are illegal.)
The Kallang River stretches from Marina Barrage to the Lower Peirce Reservoir, passing along Rochor Canal, Kallang Basin, Singapore River and Bishan Ang Mo Kio park. The whole river length is about 10km.
