Chebei Village Profile:
Chebei, also known as Longxi, is located in the eastern part of Guangzhou city, between Zhongshan Avenue and Huangpu Avenue. Its history dates back to the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the late Song and early Yuan Dynasties. During the late Song and early Yuan Dynasties, the Jin army invaded the south, and people from the Central Plains migrated south to escape the war. The Su family, currently residing in Xihua, moved to Yongtai Township (present-day Chebei) in Panyu at the end of the Song Dynasty (1138). At that time, there were already surnames such as Tang, Bai, Zhong, and Luo. Subsequently, the ancestors of Chebei gradually moved to Yongtai Township, which is now Chebei, choosing to settle on both banks of the Chebei River, gradually forming a village. On the east bank of the village lived a descendant of Wang Daofu named Longxi, who devoted himself to the construction of the village and was deeply loved and supported by the villagers. To commemorate Wang Longxi, later generations renamed the village Longxi Village and named the river flowing through the center of the village "Longxi," thus giving Longxi Village its name. Furthermore, to commemorate Wang Longxi's merits, flags bearing the name "Longxi" were planted on the dragon boats as a sign of remembrance.
In the 25th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign (1686), Panyu Lubusi established 12 forts, with Longxi Village belonging to Chebei Fort. The Chebei Fort office was located in Longxi Village, hence the name Chebei. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chebei was divided into eight neighborhoods based on the surnames with ancestral halls. The Eight Neighborhood Hall was located on the west side of the Chebei Canal in the south-central part of the village, serving as the meeting place for representatives of the eight neighborhoods. The villagers of the eight neighborhoods lived in the following areas: West Bank, East Bank, and Shamei. West Bank, located west of the Chebei Canal, included the Sumai Neighborhood, Hao Neighborhood, Suma Neighborhood, and Suliang Neighborhood. West Bank had 10 communities (Dongge Community, Bushi Community, Beimen Community, Baoshuli, Dongxi Community, Qingxi Community, Shuang Community, Nan Community, Huangnitang Dongpingli, and Xihua Community). The east bank refers to the households of Jian Yue, Wang Yue, and Li Yue, who lived on the east side of Chebei Canal. Shamei is located at the southern end of the west side of Chebei Canal, and includes Lianghuang Yue. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chebei was divided into four sections. The areas under the jurisdiction of the four sections are as follows: Section 1: Dongge Community (Gaodisu), Bushi Community (Gaodisu), Beimen Community, Dongxi Community, and Dabaoshuli. Section 2: Xihua Community, Qingxi Community, Shuang Community, Nanbian Community, and Huangditang Dongpingli. Section 3: Shamei Qiming Street and Shamei Jiangxia Street. Section 4: Jiangtou Beizheng Street, East Bank Yongtai Straight Street, East Bank Yutian Street, East Bank Tiantai Street, East Bank Citang Street, and East Bank Yongkou Street.
