Xibiankeng River, an important tributary of Chebei River, carries a wealth of history and culture: it not only took part in surrounding residents' lives, but also witnessed the urban development of Guangzhou. However, with the rapid development of the city, Xibiankeng River was seriously polluted, and the ecology of the nearby living environment faced severe challenges. Myself living in Tianhe district, I hated so much to walk along the Liede River beside my home: the stink made people so unpleasant. In fact, a lot of rivers, the so-called "Chongs" in downtown Guangzhou, suffered from bad water quality issues for many years.
In recent years, however, the Guangzhou government has carried out a series of actions to restore the environments along those urban rivers. Specifically for Xibiankeng River, the origin of the river was loaded with heavy manufacturing industries, polluting the river directly. River chief Dongpei Gu therefore insisted on patrolling the river, organizing volunteering actions to do so. Many river chiefs like Gu did works that were proven effective many years later, and such changes ultimately became a highlight of Guangzhou's urban ecological innovation.
We hope that, by this event, we can physically contribute to the protection of the river, and enjoy a wonderful afternoon with geocachers.
