Fort C. F. Smith is a significant historical landmark located in Arlington, Virginia. Constructed during the American Civil War in 1863, the fort served as a crucial defense for the Union capital, Washington, D.C. Named after Major General Charles Ferguson Smith, the fort played a vital role in protecting the city from Confederate attacks. The well-preserved earthworks and other remnants of the fort offer visitors a glimpse into the region's rich military history. Today, Fort C. F. Smith Park, encompassing the site, provides a tranquil outdoor space for recreation and education, with walking trails, a visitor center, and interpretive exhibits that delve into the fort's historical significance.
The Arlington park offers numerous points of interest including a Civil War Visitor Center, the Hendry House restored mansion, Civil War Earthwork Ruins, the Bird Creek area that was landscaped to support a variety of migrating birds and native wildlife, and an Ornamental Peace Garden.
This geocache is placed close to the walking trails that run through the grounds and ridge for the steep hills that descend to the Potomac River.
