Rutherglen is a popular wine-producing region in Northeast Victoria. The earliest grape vines were planted in the 1850’s followed by the discovery of gold in the region in 1860. Rutherglen’s first Wine Festival was held in 1967, an annual tradition which has continued. Rutherglen’s rich history is complimented by its natural beauty, prolific birdlife, productive and picturesque farmland, popular food and wine culture and its proximity to the Murray River.
The Rutherglen Loop Trail caches have been placed to encourage walking and cycling near scenic farmland, vineyards and waterways.
The Loop Trails were officially opened in February 2025 and the Silo Art project was due to be completed in mid 2025.

Rutherglen Loop Trails were approved, grant funded and constructed between 2022-24 to expand walking and cycling tourism around Rutherglen. There are approximately 48 km’s of trails, including both new paths and upgrades to existing rail trails and shared pathways. The existing Rail Trail to Wahgunyah is the longest section at 8.5km. There is also a River Loop along the Murray River and a Lake Loop to connect tracks to Lake Moodemere. Shorter sections connect Wineries, accommodation and local landmarks around Wahgunyah and the Rutherglen township.
