Gata ble kalt opp etter sagakongen Olav den hellige i 1864. Óláfr Haraldsson ble født på 990-tallet og døde på Stiklestad i 1030. Han ble erklært som helgen ikke lenge etter sin død og var konge i Norge fra 1015 til 1028. Olav den helliges saga er den åttende og mest omfattende av sagaene i Heimskringla, forfattet av Snorre Sturlason. Snorre beskriver Olav som "…..en dugelig kar, han var vakker å se til, middels høy av vekst; han viste tidlig god forstand og talte godt for seg".

To andre konger, faktisk far og sønn (om enn uekte) med egne sagaer i Heimskringla har gater kalt opp etter seg i Oslo. Det sies at epler ikke faller langt fra stammen, men i dette tilfellet ser det annerledes ut. Faren var fredsæl, men sønnen var av det krigerske slaget og dro i viking flere ganger og døde en voldsom død.

The street was named after king Olav the Holy in 1864. Óláfr Haraldsson was born in the 990s and died at Stiklestad in 1030. He was declared a saint not long after his death and was king of Norway from 1015 to 1028. The Saga of Olav the Holy is the eighth and most comprehensive of the sagas in Heimskringla, authored by Snorri Sturluson. Snorri describes Olav as “.....a capable man, he was handsome to look at, of medium height; he showed good sense early on and was well-spoken.”

Two other kings, actually father and son (though illegitimate) with their own sagas in Heimskringla, have streets named after them in Oslo. It is said that apples don’t fall far from the tree, but in this case, it seems different. The father was peaceful, but the son was of the warlike kind, went on multiple Viking raids, and met a violent death.
