I Sverige öppnades 1891 det första sanatoriet i Mörsil nära Åre och sammanlagt skapade man 61 sanatorier på olika håll i Sverige, vanligen i natursköna lugna områden, ofta i barrskog.

The first sanatorium was opened in 1858 in Germany by the doctor Hermann Brehmer in the Riesengebirge mountain range in Lower Silesia. The intention was to cure tuberculosis "by hygienic-dietary regimen in closed institution", and such were later instituted all over the world.
In Sweden, the first sanatorium was opened in Mörsil near Åre in 1891, and a total of 61 sanatoriums were created in different parts of Sweden, usually in scenic, quiet areas, often in conifer forests.
