Geocache Description:

This is another cache in the Faded Markers Series. This series will mainly focus on older, near forgotten burial plots of pioneers in the Niagara Region and beyond. The goal of this series is not necessarily the length of the walk nor the difficulty of the find, but rather a simple reverence for those who came before us to shape our area.

The first of the Willicks to come to Canada were Nicholas (died 1831) and Anne Marie (1777-1853) Willick (spelt Willig in the early documents), and their three sons: Joseph (1808-1872), Johann (1811-1882), and Nicholas (1815-1894). They immigrated to Canada from a German area of Upper Alsace, France in 1828. They settled in what is now Ontario (Willoughby Township, District of Niagara, Upper Canada). Nicholas died three years later and is buried on the original farm site.

This cache is located on the original property of Nicholas Willick and then John Willick. Eight, possibly more, Willick (aka Willik) family members are buried in this small cemetery. The cemetery was listed in the 1973 City By-law, as abandoned.
The first Burial was that of Nicholas Willick (1831)

Subsequent burials that I could read on the markers themselves are as follows:

Benjamin Nov. 5 1834 10m 2d John Mar 5 1838 3m 26d Nicholas Jun 10 1839 5d Jacob Nov 9 1852 2y 7m 24d Esther Nov 11 1852 4y 8m 9d Esther(mother) June 18 1893 79y 10m 16d Henry Nov 11 1871 27y 7m 11d

Please respect the property and those living around it. No night-time caching!

Cache is a 35mm film canister and can be retrieved from outside of the cemetery. Access to the cache can only be made from Detenbeck Road, directly south of the cemetery. Bushwhacking may be involved and depending on the weather, the hike may be wet.
