"Launch Around the Lake" is a geocaching series of nine caches that will take you around 17,088 acres of the Pymatuning Reservoir. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) (State Parks) owns three-quarters of the lake while the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) (State Parks) owns the remaining one-quarter. Eight caches are hidden in Pennsylvania and one cache is hidden in Ohio. Written somewhere in or on the cache there will be a cache word. Write down the word for each cache and keep track of them on a piece of paper or on your phone. Once you have the words for all nine caches, visit the Pymatuning State Park Office in Jamestown, Pennsylvania to receive an original cache pin, courtesy of the Pymatuning Lake Association!
Pymatuning State Park Office in Jamestown is open 8 am to 4 pm Monday thru Friday. From Memorial day weekend to Labor day, the office will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, 8 am to 4 pm.

During WWII when the international crisis began to deepen between both Europe and Asia the United States had one basic torpedo. They were standard missles driven by a combination of compressed air and combustion of high volatile fuel. Unfortunately, the exhaust gases produced a brillant white wake of bubbles that warned an intended ship in time for escape. Germany was already using an electric torpedo that caused no wake. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, an undetonated German C7c washed ashore on allied soil. The Navy got possession of this torpedo and soon Westinghouse Factory in Sharon PA was manufacturing torpedos that made no wake.Pymatuning Lake was the perfect place for testing.
The torpedoes did not have explosives in the warhead. Instead, they had a combination of chemicals contained in the warhead to simulate the weight of the explosives and were then brought to the launching dock to be tested. The gases also permitted the nose of the torpedo to rise to the surface so it could be hauled into the recovery boat.
This geocache takes you the site where the torpedos were tested. Remnants of the launch dock are still here. Look north and imagine a 20 foot torpedo speeding underwater five miles or more up the lake. Once the torpedo was perfected there was no more need to test them in the lake. The MARK 18 torpedo was the final product. The wakeless topedos accounted for almost 400 naval and merchant ships sunk and many others damaged.
