Pets are very popular in the United States. It is estimated that 66% of all households in the United States own at least one pet.
Dogs are the most popular pet, followed by cats and freshwater fish. Americans spend about $136 billion on their pets and pet products each year.
I have had hamsters (Sherman and Beasley), fish, a salamander (Sally) and a bunny as well as five dogs (Mojo, Mr. Spock, Ginger, Shauna and Mellow Yellow) and six cats (Four Socks, Toasty, Bastet, Snickers, Winkin' and Sweet Pea.) I loved them all. I also volunteered at the shelter and fostered many cats and kittens. I think the most animals I had in my house at one time was thirteen! (kittens don't take up much room and they're so fun to watch.)
