Geocache Description:

"Launch Around the Lake" is a geocaching series of nine caches that will take you around 17,088 acres of the Pymatuning Reservoir. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) (State Parks) owns three-quarters of the lake while the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) (State Parks) owns the remaining one-quarter. Eight caches are hidden in Pennsylvania and one cache is hidden in Ohio. Written somewhere in or on the cache there will be a cache word. Write down the word for each cache and keep track of them on a piece of paper or on your phone. Once you have the words for all nine caches, visit the Pymatuning State Park Office in Jamestown, Pennsylvania to receive an original cache pin, courtesy of the Pymatuning Lake Association!

Pymatuning State Park Office in Jamestown is open 8 am to 4 pm Monday thru Friday. From Memorial day weekend to Labor day, the office will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, 8 am to 4 pm.

Shagbark Hickory trees are important for bats. Indiania bats make their homes in snug crevices beneath the loose bark. During the summer months, bats often roost in shagbark hickories during the daylight hours. Females will also gather in colonies and raise their pups in these trees. At night, the bats leave their roosts to go foraging for insects. Hickories are members of the walnut family, and the fruit of the shagbark hickory is highly prized by both humans and wildlife. The fruit is a nut with a hard outer husk that splits open when ripe.  Black bears  foxes, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and a number of birds enjoy the nuts every fall.

The wood is excellent for burning, and it’s used to produce flavorful food like hickory-smoked bacon. Hickory lumber is strong and shock-resistant, which makes it a great option for making tool handles, ladder rungs, athletic equipment, furniture, and flooring.
