Welcome to Mellon Park....again?
Another easy one? Depends. It was easy for me......
American Basswood trees are easy to identify with their heartshaped leaves with, typically, uneven leaf bases. You might know them by another name, the Linden tree. White flagrant flowers make them attractive for people and songbirds and they have weird hanging fruit that forms in small clusters of round brownish fruit. The fruit is edible, though they sure don't look appetizing. Then again, I said edible and not delicious. It's a large tree that can grow to over 60' tall and provides plenty of shade. Like Westinghouse, Mellon Park is an Arboretum. Officially in April, 2020, so take a look around and you will notice a lot of the tree species are marked. Mellon has an Herb Garden, though it is currently closed as they restore the area, where all the herbs are marked as well.
