Il Giardino Botanico Mediterraneo.
L’Abruzzo, per la sua conformazione fisica, è una regione che ha al suo interno numerosi parchi, oasi, riserve o anche giardini botanici. Alcuni sono naturali, altri realizzati appositamente.
Un posto davvero incantevole da visitare è il Giardino Botanico Mediterraneo, a San Salvo (CH). Il più grande d’Abruzzo e uno dei rari giardini dunali italiani, nonché l’unico in tutta la costa adriatica. Il Giardino offre la possibilità di osservare e conoscere le caratteristiche dell’habitat mediterraneo e di rare specie botaniche, altrove estinte.
Numerose sono le specie botaniche che oggi trovano dimora all’interno del Giardino Botanico Mediterraneo e che ricostruiscono la tipica vegetazione mediterranea: a arbusti sempreverdi, macchia bassa a ginepro e rosmarino e macchia alta a leccio, che sfuma nel bosco di latifoglie nella zona retrodunale.
Grazie alle piene del torrente Buonanotte, all’interno del Giardino si possono ammirare dei piccoli stagni naturali che fanno da riparo per molti uccelli migratori, fra i quali il Cavaliere d’Italia. In questa area è stata reintrodotta la testuggine palustre, originaria della zona. Sulla spiaggia del giardino botanico si verificano regolarmente spiaggiamenti della tartaruga marina e per questo motivo è stato allestito un centro di recupero delle tartarughe terrestri e marine.

The Mediterranean Botanical Garden.
Abruzzo, due to its physical conformation, is a region that has numerous parks, oases, reserves or even botanical gardens. Some are natural, others created specifically.
A truly enchanting place to visit is the Mediterranean Botanical Garden, in San Salvo (CH). The largest in Abruzzo and one of the rare Italian dune gardens, as well as the only one on the entire Adriatic coast. The Garden offers the opportunity to observe and learn about the characteristics of the Mediterranean habitat and rare botanical species, extinct elsewhere.
Numerous botanical species today find a home within the Mediterranean Botanical Garden and reconstruct the typical Mediterranean vegetation: evergreen shrubs, low scrub with juniper and rosemary and high scrub with holm oak, which fades into the broad-leaved forest in the back-dune area.
Thanks to the floods of the Buonanotte stream, inside the Garden you can admire small natural ponds that provide shelter for many migratory birds, including the Black-winged Stilt. In this area the marsh turtle, native to the area, has been reintroduced. On the beach of the botanical garden, sea turtles regularly strand and for this reason a recovery center for land and sea turtles has been set up.
