Geocache Description:

The cache is not hidden at the posted coordinates and it is not necessary to visit the place to get the final coordinates.

The idea for this cache came to us while sipping cocoa at a gas station. We noticed a display stand filled with various lottery tickets. We were captured by a lottery in which the main prize is a monthly pension of CZK 200,000 (about EUR 8,000) for 20 years. You guess 7 numbers out of 33.

Let's analyze another lottery in which players try to guess 6 numbers out of 49 for a chance to win a significant cash prize. Mathematically, this involves calculating combinations, meaning how many ways one can choose K elements from a set of N distinct elements, such that the order of selection does not matter. There are nearly 14 million possible combinations (specifically 13,983,816). If someone were to play this lottery every day, they would have to wait an average of over 38,000 years to win.

There are many number lotteries worldwide. For example, Eurojackpot offers higher grand prizes, and the number of combinations is about ten times larger, around 140 million. For the U.S. Powerball, it’s even about 292 million combinations.

Lotteries are often called the “hope tax” because of the incredibly low odds of winning, effectively taxing those who dream of easy, quick profits. Playwright Henry Fielding, author of the play The Lottery, remarked: “The lottery is actually a tax imposed on all fools. This tax is easily levied, for folly is still in fashion.”

William Hartston, a Cambridge-educated mathematician and former British chess champion, states in his book Numb and Number: "People bet on the lottery in the foolish hope of winning the jackpot with a one in 14 million chance …. Yet there is a greater chance of losing one's life in the next 20 minutes than winning the lottery."

By the way, the owners of this cache certainly don’t waste money on lottery bets. Instead, they prefer spending on more and more PET containers, which they turn into new caches ;)

How to find the final coordinates

Consider the lottery mentioned above, where you need to select 7 numbers from a pool of 33. Enter the number of possible combinations (incl.  thousands separators) into the Certitude checker to reveal the final coordinates and a hint.

Just in case, a local cacher will provide maintenance assistance.
