Advent Calendar 2024 Day 16: St James, Shardlow
ย

This concept of an advent calendar set of church micros is unashamedly copied from a set I found in Moray, Northern Scotland. When I discovered those, I knew I had to do something similar. All of these church micros are set in South Derbyshire, although geographically the district is quite wide spread as you may have noticed from A-Z and similar caches. I created a list of candidate churches in the area; some had had church micros before but I had no qualms about "resurrecting" those. There are a couple of unusual or off the beaten track entries in the set as well just to add to interest.
St. James' is a church that is part of the Trent and Derwent Parish Churches group of 7 churches in the area. It is the most Easterly church in South Derbyshire.
From the National Churches Trust descrption: A Grade II listed building, it was built in the 1830s to serve the Parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne, which was at that time the largest inland port in the country. With its box-pews and tall pulpit it is a fascinating example of early Victorian architecture. The boarded timber king post roof dates from 1901. The chancel has boards displaying the ten commandments either side of the altar, and a stained glass window depicting Abraham, Moses and Aaron, installed in 1852.
There are many wall memorials of Shardlow residents. Wall paintings of decorative crosses date from the late 1800s. The church tower at the west end houses six bells cast in 1836, and the Victorian clock mechanism. The organ dates from 1868.
The peaceful graveyard, being developed as a haven for wildlife, supports an interesting mix of trees and wildflowers. The gate and railings are separately Grade II listed.
Due to a high number of other caches in the area this is a simple multi and is a lttle distance away. The posted co-ords will take you to a plaque on a gate. The two dates given are ABCD and EFGH. The cache can then be found by projecting a distance of (F-A)GH metres on a bearing of C(B-E)(B-A-C-E) from the posted co-ordinates.

Logging Etiquette
Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
