Geocache Description:

What is this?  I can see masts of a pirate ship.  How do I get in?  Is anyone in there?

Well it seems not.  This area is closed and boarded up but the draw bridge, gates, high walls and ship masts still get my attention everytime we pass and its a great photo op.

These gates are guarded by a snake .  We saw a friendly garter popping his head up through the bridge walkway boards.  When we said we were geocachers, he ducked back down to let us pass.

Leave any electrical wires alone.  They are NOT part of this cache.  For real.

History

This location used to be the site of Fort Menendez at The Old Florida Museum.  There was never a real fort at this location but the building and attractions offered family-friendly interactive history demonstrations, hands on activities and reenactments.  The Old Florida Museum has been moved to The Florida Agricultural Legacy  Learning Center, leaving the Fort to deteriorate and become overgrown.  Photos on TripAdvisor show the well-kept and interactive family attraction.

Congrats to scrapes for the FTF!

Good Swag

  • Stickers
  • Coins
  • Small toys or trinkets

Bad swag

  • Buttons, pins or anything sharp or pokey 🧷 📌
  • Nothing with batteries 🔋
  • Business cards 👎
  • Religious or political material 🤷‍♂️
  • Anything with DNA like earrings or hair pins (gross! 🤢)
  • Trash. It’s called Cache in Trash Out. So take it with you and pick up more trash on the way 🚮

Leaving Trackables

This isn’t a travel bug hotel or a premium cache. We do not recommend leaving trackables here as the may get lost. We only like leaving our trackables at premium travel bug hotels (TB hotel).

Taking trackables

If you find a trackable in this cache and take it, you should log it right away and remember trackables are an important part of the geocaching game experience. You need to move them and re-hide them, NEVER keep them.
