Geocache Description:

Advent Calendar 2024 Day 13: St Andrew, Radbourne

This concept of an advent calendar set of church micros is unashamedly copied from a set I found in Moray, Northern Scotland. When I discovered those, I knew I had to do something similar. All of these church micros are set in South Derbyshire, although geographically the district is quite wide spread as you may have noticed from A-Z and similar caches. I created a list of candidate churches in the area; some had had church micros before but I had no qualms about "resurrecting" those. There are a couple of unusual or off the beaten track entries in the set as well just to add to interest.

Please read the instructions carefully to find the church and then the cache. Most of the area is estate land so please keep to public footpaths and keep any geopets on a lead and under control.

This church is another great find, tucked down a quiet lane on the edge of the estate of Radbourne Hall yet only a few miles from Derby City Centre.

The church is a Grade I listed building. It dates from around 1300 but the oldest details are the double sedilia [seats, usually of stone, found on the liturgical south side of an altar, for use by the officiant and assistants] in the chancel, from around 1150-1175. The church contains carved bench ends dating from the 14th Century which were originally in Dale Abbey. Frances Pole apparently purchased the entire interior fittings when the monastery was dissolved. The church has memorials to the Pole and de la Pole families including one to German Pole, MP for Derbyshire in 1656.

The church may be a little difficult to find, so please note the waypoints. There are clear signs to point you to a parking area although this may appear to be in use by a farm, so consider parking roadside if there is space. The path down to the church is then clearly signposted. Please do not enter any properties. On the other side of the churchyard at the posted co-ordinates is an information board. Gather the following information (if there are two digits, take the last one).

A Foxfields Farm
B Soldier's Cottage
C Old Park House
D The School House
E Park Farm
F Gardener's Cottage

The cache is at N52 55.ABC W001 34.DEF.  The checksum of the missing digits is 27.

Logging Etiquette

Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
