Tasks:
1. take a close look at the rock. Describe the color, structure and recognizable features of the rock. Can you see the slate-like, fine-grained structure or the band-like structure that is typical of gneiss? Make a note of your observations.
2. use a compass or the compass app on your smartphone and determine the direction (azimuth) and inclination of the upright layers of rock. In which direction do the layers run and at what angle do they stand?
3. why do you think the rock layers were brought into an almost vertical position here? What tectonic forces could have been at work here?
4. optional: Take a picture of yourself or an object on site.

Background:
Collioure is located on the Mediterranean Sea, right on the border between France and Spain. The geology of the region was strongly influenced by the formation of the Pyrenees. The Pyrenees were formed around 65 million years ago when the Iberian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. This collision led to intensive folding and deformation of the sedimentary rocks, which were originally deposited horizontally. Due to the enormous pressure and temperatures during this process, many of these rocks were metamorphosed and brought into steep, almost vertical positions.
What are metamorphic rocks?
Metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss are formed when existing rocks are exposed to high pressure and temperature conditions. This process changes their mineral structure and gives them new physical properties. The region around Collioure consists mainly of these two types of rock:
- Shale: A fine-grained, easily cleavable rock that often shows layering (foliation) due to tectonic pressure. Slate is formed from mudstone and often has a layered structure.
- Gneiss: A coarser-grained, more metamorphic rock with clear stripes or bands of different minerals. Gneiss is formed by even more intense changes in pressure and temperature and often contains harder minerals.
Geological formation of the uplifted layers
The uplifted layers in Collioure are the result of several geological processes:
- Tectonic collision and mountain building: About 65 million years ago, the Iberian plate began to push against the Eurasian plate. This collision led to the formation of the Pyrenees and caused the rock layers to fold, compress and in some cases rise steeply. Originally horizontal sediment layers were brought into vertical or almost vertical positions.
- Metamorphosis through pressure and temperature: The pressure and heat during the formation of the mountains led to metamorphosis. Claystones and sandstones transformed into slate and gneiss. These metamorphic rocks are more resistant to erosion, making them prominent features in the landscape.
- Erosion and weathering: After the rocks were uplifted, the effects of wind, water and climate set in. This erosion removed softer layers of rock and left the more robust layers of schist and gneiss in their steep position as prominent rocks.

Aufgaben:

Was sind metamorphe Gesteine?
