The Portuguese Discovery Monument commemorates the maritime achievements of Portuguese navigators. Set atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the monument honors the exploration legacy that helped map much of the New World during the Age of Discovery. It stands as a tribute to the skills, bravery, and contributions of Portuguese sailors who ventured into uncharted waters and expanded the boundaries of the known world.
The original monument at this location was constructed from sandstone, but it quickly deteriorated under the harsh ocean winds. The current monument is made from North Jay White Granite, which was quarried in Maine. This granite is composed of several minerals, including potassium feldspar (a pinkish or white mineral with a glassy look), clear quartz (a colorless, crystalline mineral), plagioclase feldspar (a white to pale mineral with a dull shine), black mica (a shiny, black mineral that forms in thin sheets), and white mica (similar to black mica but white or silvery). It may also contain other minerals such as garnet (red or pink crystals), magnetite (black, metallic looking mineral), and apatite (small, glassy crystals). North Jay White Granite has a bright appearance, which comes from the clarity of its quartz, which lacks the gray or brown tint seen in smoky quartz, as well as the reflective whiteness of its feldspar. North Jay White Granite was formed millions of years ago deep beneath the Earth's surface when molten rock, or magma, cooled and solidified slowly. Geologically, it is noted for its low absorption rate of 0.27%, high compressive strength of 27,700 psi, and flexural strength of 2,020 psi. These properties make it a popular building material.
Logging Requirements:
- Describe the color, texture, and grain size of the granite.
- The original monument barely lasted 18 years before it had to be disassembled. The monument was rebuilt in 2011, this time using granite. How does North Jay White Granite appear to be holding up to the elements? Based on your observations, why do you think this particular type of granite was chosen?
- Upload a photo with the Portuguese Discovery Monument. You don't have to be in the photo, though it is strongly encouraged.
