Mofettes
The name Mofette comes from the Italian word mofeta, which comes from the Latin mefitis or mephitis. It means something like “harmful emissions”.
The spectrum ranges from dry gas springs to mineral springs containing carbon dioxide.
In the Rotaro, gaseous CO⊃2; flows upwards from a magma chamber through very fine channels in the rock and emerges at the mofettes. To the right of the crater circular path there are several small holes. Strikingly, and in contrast to fumaroles (above 100 ° C), the escaping gas is usually cool. When it's over 20°C you can feel the cool draft escaping from the mofettes.
CO⊃2; is heavier than air and is therefore a gas that displaces air. It can collect in hollows or depressions and accumulate strongly locally. At a concentration of more than 10% it can be fatal for animals and humans. The oxygen from the lungs is displaced and the blood becomes acidic. CO⊃2; accumulation can unnoticed lead to unconsciousness and suffocation (e.g. septic tanks...) or if people carelessly climb into hollows or caves while exploring mofettes.
In Ischia there are 2 mofettes that stand out. One in the sea underwater (in Cartaromana Bay) and the second on land inside the Rotaro crater. There are small holes in the slope to the right of the crater circular path. When outside temperatures are above 20 ° C, you can clearly feel the cool draft coming from the holes.
Log conditions - Go to the Mofetten at the Rotaro (header) and answer the following questions:
1. Describe the mofettes: size and number of holes from which you feel gas escaping?
2. Why is the CO⊃2; gas leak harmless here?
3. Estimate the outlet temperature?
4. Are there any other mofettes worth highlighting on Ischia? If so, where is this?

Mofetten
Der Name Mofette leitet sich vom italienischen Wort mofeta ab, welches vom lateinischen mefitis oder mephitis stammt. Es bedeutet so viel wie „schädliche Ausdünstung“.
Das Spektrum reicht von trockenen Gasquellen bis zu kohlenstoffdioxidhaltigen Mineralquellen.
Im Rotaro strömt gasförmiges CO⊃2; aus einer Magmakammer, durch sehr feine Kanäle im Gestein, nach oben und tritt an den Mofetten zu Tage. Rechts des Kraterrundweges befinden sich mehrere kleine Löcher. Auffallend und zum Unterschied von Fumarolen (über 100 ° C) ist das austretende Gas meist kühl. Wenn es über 20° C hat kann man den kühlen Luftzug spüren der aus den Mofetten entweicht.
CO⊃2; ist schwerer als Luft, somit ein die Luft verdrängenden Gas. Es kann sich in Mulden oder Senken sammeln und lokal stark anreichern. Bei einer Konzentration von mehr als 10 % kann das für Tier und Mensch tödlich werden. Der Sauerstoff aus der Lunge wird verdrängt und das Blut wird angesäuert. Eine CO⊃2; Anreichung kann so unbemerkt zur Bewusstlosigkeit und einem Erstickungstod führen (z.B.: Klärgruben …) oder wenn Personen bei der Erforschung von Mofetten unüberlegt in Mulden oder Höhlen einsteigen.
Auf Ischia gibt es 2 hervorzuhebende Mofetten. Eine im Meer unter Wasser (in der Cartaromana-Bucht) und die zweite an Land im Inneren des Rotaro-Kraters. Hier befinden sich rechts des Kraterrundweges kleine Löcher im Hang. Bei Außentemperaturen über 20 ° C kann man aus den Löchern deutlich den kühlen Luftzug spüren.
Logbedingungen - Begib dich zu den Mofetten am Rotaro (header) und beantworte folgende Fragen:
1. Beschreibe die Mofetten: Größe und Anzahl der Löcher aus denen du Gas ausströmen spürst?
2. Warum ist hier der CO⊃2; Gasaustritt ungefährlich?
3. Schätze die Austrittstemperatur?
4. Gibt es auf Ischia noch weitere hervorzuhebende Mofetten? Wenn ja, wo ist diese?
