Geocache Description:

Welcome to St. Augustine – Where History Greets You

Welcome to the Nation’s Oldest City! As you explore the charming downtown neighborhoods of St. Augustine—lined with centuries-old trees and beautiful historic homes—we hope this geocache adds a little extra fun to your walk.

St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who arrived from Spain and established this coastal town as a safe harbor and new home. He was not only the city’s founder but, in a way, its very first neighbor—offering peace and cooperation with the local Timucua people. That spirit of welcome is something we’ve felt personally here too—our first neighbor when we moved to town was named Pedro, and like his historic namesake, he made us feel right at home from the start.

This cache celebrates the legacy of friendship, exploration, and new beginnings—the very same spirit that makes the geocaching community so special. Whether you're a local or just passing through, you're part of a shared adventure rooted in curiosity, connection, and a warm welcome. It's a small nod to the enduring ties between St. Augustine and its sister city, Avilés, Spain, reminding us that connections—across centuries, across the world or across the street—make a place truly special.

Enjoy your stroll through this vibrant neighborhood. Take your time, soak in the stories told by the architecture and oak canopies, and know you're always welcome here.
