This brick and bluestone bridge was built in the 1860s before the opening of the Bendigo railway line in 1862. The line previously had two tracks, but one was removed to reduce maintenance costs. The bluestone that was used to make this bridge, as well as many other bridges in the local area, was all derived from shallow local quarries. Quarries in this area also provided stone for many buildings in Melbourne, including the Town Hall and St Patrick's Cathedral. For more information about bluestone in Victoria, including maps and detailed history of quarries and constructions (including the Malmsbury Viaduct) you can read this freely available PDF by Susan M. Walter, President of the Malmsbury Historical Society: https://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:14191
