Geocache Description:

The first church built in Howth was on the site of Howth Abbey, in Howth village. It was founded by Sightrygg, King of Dublin around 1042. Around 1235, the old church was amalgamated with the church on Ireland's Eye and a new church was built - founded by Luke, Archbishop of Dublin on land granted by Sir Almeric St. Lawrence. Little remains of either of these churches and most of the present abbey dates back to the late 14th century or early 15th century.  The tomb of Christopher St. Lawrence, ancestor to the Earls of Howth, is preserved among the ruins, and dates from 1470. The graveyard, which is maintained by Fingal County Council, has been closed to new burials for many years. It is flooded with history.

This GZ offers one of many "must see" viewpoints within Howth of the harbour and East Pier, according to the Tripadvisor reviews - I agree!.  Easily accessed from a few different directions depending whether you are on your way up or down. Open Mon-Thurs 9am - 5pm and Fri 9am - 4:30pm as per the sign on the gate.

A member of the Irish Trad Band 'The Dubliners', Barney McKenna, lived very close by to this area before his passing.
