Cache Across Southern California 2025

Greetings film critics! Are you ready to explore Hollywood through the ages? Find and locate one of the roughly 40 CASC geocaches across all 10 Southern California counties. As you find geocaches, you may stamp your passport to track your progress and turn it in at the SoCal Spring Fling mega event on May 3rd, 2025 to redeem your film critic award.

How do I use the CASC Passport?

Use the stamp in each CASC geocache and stamp any of the 15 small movie tickets on the front page of the passport. At the bottom of each ticket, write the GC code of the geocache that corresponds to the stamp provided. Then on the reverse side, circle or highlight the caches you found from the list. Doing these steps will increase efficiency and decrease wait times at the CASC table at Spring Fling.

CASC Prize Redemption

To qualify for prize redemption at SoCal Spring Fling 2025, there are two award packages being offered: Silver and Gold. For the SILVER award you must find at least 6 CASC geocaches in 3 counties. To qualify for the GOLD award you must find at least 15 CASC geocaches in all 10 counties. Silver award includes a CASC 2025 completion e-badge for your geocaching profile, CASC sticker, and a small mystery prize. Gold award includes a complimentary special edition CASC 2025 geocoin + the silver award prizes. Only one prize package per qualifying account. Prize distribution will be on a first come first served basis.

Sharing your progress

Feel free to share and post your progress with others on the official CASC Facebook group. Important announcements leading up to Spring Fling will be periodically added here as well.

Monsters, Inc

Monsters Inc was premiered at the El Capitan Theater on October 28, 2001 and released to the general public on November 2nd of the same year. As the third highest grossing film of 2001, the film won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for Best Animated Film. Monsters Inc tells a tale about a world run by monsters that harness the screams of human children in order to power their cities. The job of "scaring" children is the coveted occupation for monsters. While trying to outwit other scarers, a portal is accidently left open allowing a human child into the monster's realm. Follow the antics of the monsters as they try to return the child to the human world and in the process find a fascinating twist that may save all of monsterland.

Take some time to explore the town and the surrounding area.  If you came up through Palm Springs, you may have noticed the curbs and gutters along the highway near Palm Springs were crafted from rocks set in concrete.  This is work that was accomplished under Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal Program from the 1930's  On the Banning side of the mountain is a retired spring "Bay Tree Spring" where a bench was placed in the side of the hill commemorating the New Deal program and all it accomplished.  The spring used to be an area where people from the valley would visit and fill water jugs to get free mountiain spring water for their homes.  The spring has since been capped off and does not run any longer.

While the town may seem small, the people of the community are welcoming to others and are more than willing to share history and stories from the community.  Stop in the shops and see what small town life in Southern California is like.

If you are of the mood to camp and enjoy the outdoors, there are several campgrounds in the area that cater to all types of campers.  Thousand Trails in Pine Cove has amenities from tent sites to full hook ups.  Hurkey Creek in Mountain Center has a lower eleveation and is situated near Lake Hemet where you can hike and fish.  Black Mountain is more rural with beautiful views of the valley.

If you prefer to cache off the beaten trail, there are several fire control roads that lead off the mountain where caches have been hidden.  Many of these roads are off highway vehicle approved and provide excellent excurisions through the forest.

For those of you who are movie buffs, Elvis Presley filmed "Kid Galahad" in Idyllwild in 1961, and Garner Ranch was a stand in for the Ponderosa in Bonanza.  Celebrities who have owned houses in Idyllwild inlcude Doris Day, Michael J Fox, Sean Connery, and Dolly Parton.
