Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed off of one of the trails in Augustin Bernal Park on the Pleasanton ridge west of the town.

Augustin Bernal Park is a 232 acre open space offering recreational opportunities for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians through a network of trails. Visitors enjoy spectacular views of the valley plus a chance to explore the disappearing California oak habitat. The Park shares its west and south boundaries with the East Bay Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.

Once part of the Golden Eagle Ranch, the land for Augustin Bernal Park was donated to the City of Pleasanton by Walter S. Johnson in 1971. The park is named for one of the earliest settlers in this area, Augustin Bernal, who held the original Spanish land grant for the property.

The cameoflaged plastic container, about half the size of an ammo box, has been placed about 80 paces uphill from the trail. The cache contains the goecaching note, a log book and a variety of items including the Generic Travel Bug.

Tree cover made it difficult to get accurate coordinates so I have provided some hints and also some photos which may help geocachers zero in on the target.

The main entrance to Augustin Bernal Park is off of Foothill Road on Golden Eagle. Although this is a city park, this entry has no park sign. Visitors must stop at the gate into the exclusive Golden Eagle Estates and show a driver's licence to the guard. Only Pleasanton residents can enter. The guard will direct park visitors to follow the road to the left for about a mile to the park staging area/parking lot and the beginning of the trails.

Resouceful geocaches who do not wish to enter the park through this guarded gate and/or those geocachers who do not live in Pleasanton can find another entry northwest of this point. Check your maps. This secondary entry, off of a city street, can be tricky to find as there is no park sign on the street. Park on the street and walk several hundred feet up a narrow lane to a park gate.
