Kyrkan började byggas på 1100-talet i romansk stil, och är en av Sveriges äldsta och bäst bevarade.
Vapenhuset tillhör inte den ursprungliga byggnadskroppen, det tillkom först på 1700-talet.
Svenneby gamla kyrka användes fram till 1915.
Åren 2015-2017 genomfördes en total renovering av hela byggnaden då den hotades av en akut risk för ras.
På det branta berget ovanför kyrkan står klockstapeln med en medeltida klocka som saknar inskrift och tros vara från 1200-talet.

The church began to be built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, and is one of the oldest and best preserved in Sweden.
