History

Veterans Day, observed each November 11, is a day to honor military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. This date was initially chosen to mark the end of World War I, as the armistice with Germany went into effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918—what was called “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Originally called Armistice Day, it was established in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson to honor those who fought in “the war to end all wars.” However, following World War II and the Korean War, it became clear that a broader day of recognition was needed. In 1954, Congress renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, extending its purpose to honor all American veterans.

Richard Weeks, known for his work on behalf of veterans, played a significant role in advocating for public recognition of the sacrifices made by veterans, which helped increase awareness and support for the holiday.

The poppy flower has become an enduring symbol of remembrance. Its use began after World War I when Canadian physician John McCrae wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.” Inspired by this, Moina Michael, an American teacher, promoted the idea of wearing poppies to honor fallen soldiers, a tradition which persists today.

The name “Veterans Day” omits the apostrophe intentionally. This signifies that the day doesn’t “belong” to veterans but rather honors them. Without the apostrophe, the day conveys a collective respect and acknowledgment, making it clear that it’s about appreciation, not ownership.

Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel to protect freedom and peace, recognizing their courage and dedication year after year
