Tra tutti i mammiferi che vivono sulla Giara il Cavallino della Giara, Equus caballus giarae, è senza dubbio il più noto. Non esistendo in Sardegna ritrovamenti fossili di equini, si pensa che il cavallo venne introdotto probabilmente nel periodo nuragico o nel periodo punico. Nel medioevo intere mandrie vivevano nell'isola allo stato brado e alcune popolavano l'Isola di Sant'Antioco ancora sino alla fine dell'800. L'unico luogo in cui oggi questi animali vivono allo stato naturale è proprio qui, sull'altipiano della Giara. Caratteristici per la loro piccola stazza, i cavallini si sono adattati al particolare ambiente della Giara, con abbondanza di cibo e acqua durante inverno e primavera e scarsità delle stesse durante estate e autunno. Si stima che siano presenti da 250 a 800 esemplari.
La cache è situata al di fuori del Museo del Cavallino della Giara, che si trova in una tipica casa campidanese. Nella sezione etnografica, rivivi le tradizioni agropastorali del passato, narrate dalla viva voce degli anziani del paese.
Per loggare la cache non è necessario pagare il biglietto, tuttavia la visita al Museo è altamente consigliata, soprattutto per gli amanti dei cavalli. (www.museocavallinodellagiara.it)
The Giara Horse, Equus caballus giarae, is undoubtedly the most famous among all the mammals which live on the Giara. Since there are no fossil finds of equines in Sardinia, it is thought that the horse was probably introduced in the Nuragic period or in the Punic period. In the Middle Ages, entire herds lived on the island in the wild and some still populated Sant'Antioco island until the end of the 19th century. The only place where these animals live in their natural state today is right here, on the Giara plateau. Characteristic for their small size, the little horses have adapted to the particular environment of the Giara, with abundance of food and water during winter and spring and scarcity of the same during summer and autumn. The total population is estimated at around 250 to 800 individuals.
The cache is located outside the Museum of Cavallino della Giara, which is located in a typical Campidanese house. In the ethnographic section, relive the agro-pastoral traditions of the past, narrated by the village elders.
To log the cache it is not necessary to pay for the ticket, however a visit to the Museum is highly recommended, especially for all the horses' lovers. (www.museocavallinodellagiara.it)
