The Black Hills National Forest has been a top producer of wood products. The primary source is Ponderosa Pine which is the conifers in this area. Once the tree is cut and ready to transport, it is important to know the weight of the logs on a truck because there are load limits for the roads. There are some quick ways to estimate a load weight by knowing the density in pounds per cubic foot. Wood density is also dependent on moisture content. Wood is hygroscopic, so its density depends on the weight of water in a given volume of wood. Fortunately for you, there are standard published values to use for the calculations for these coordinates. The cache is not at the listed coordinates just like so many other caches in this series.
